In 2015, CMS began The National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes to ensure individuals with dementia residing in nursing homes receive the highest quality of care. Arkansas has made great progress in the reduction of unnecessary antipsychotic prescribing, but there is still great work to be done. Our focus is to remain vigilant in evaluating each individual’s need and ensuring valid clinical indications before using antipsychotic medications, and continually re-evaluating the need to deprescribe antipsychotics. By the end of this presentation, the participant should be able to:
• Explain why antipsychotic should be avoided in those living with dementia
• Describe adverse consequences of using antipsychotics inappropriately
• Understand ways to deprescribe antipsychotics
