Examining shifting portrayals of Mormon families in pioneer monuments from the 1890s to the present highlights Latter-day Saints' efforts to assimilate into the broader American society, while remaining true to LDS doctrine and Mormon cultural values. Comparing Mormon monuments to those erected by mainstream US society and to the contemporaneous Voortrekker Monument in South Africa reveals the ways that Mormons constructed racialized and gendered historical memory. This comprehensive study of Mormon pioneer monuments highlights the centrality of pioneer memory within the LDS subculture and suggests the importance of frontier memory to American national identity.
