Jewish mutual aid across substantial geographic distance has been a historic feature of Jewish life. Granick will explore the transformation of communal charitable networks into modern international humanitarianism especially around the First World War, and how it functioned as a form of self-governance in lieu of a state. How has this symbiotic relationship between Jewish humanitarianism and Jewish diaspora continued up through today, post Holocaust and 75 years into Israeli statehood? What does this conditioned response to conflict from afar actually do for us?
