Chabot Observatory Complex Lighting Retrofit Project
The Chabot Space and Science Center is a nearly 140 year old public observatory located in the Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland California hills. The Centers objectives were numerous and varied: Dramatically reduce operating costs with no up-front capital, reduce light trespass in adjacent forested areas, reduce discomfort glare, and create an inviting welcoming experience for approaching motorists, and cyclists visiting the facility.
The project team consisted of the centers adjunct astronomer, a third-party turn-key energy solutions provider, the local utility, the luminaire manufacturer, and the installation and commissioning team. The solution was reduced light levels, integrated bi-level motion sensing, low CCT, low discomfort glare luminaires and supplemental light trespass shielding.
