BSR/IES RP-43, Lighting for People in Outdoor Environments, is new guidance coming in 2022. Referencing the design process from ANSI/IES LP-2-20, attendees will be guided through the physical characteristics of outdoor space, why we light, when to UN-light, and thoughtful design examples of how to make the nighttime environment more understood, thereby supporting pedestrian reassurance and engagement without wasting light. Spoiler alert, you may achieve better results using less light. Highlighted within the RP-43 illuminance tables are a newly organized structure based on a design process. Ranges of acceptable illumination are offered based on responsible design choices such as lighting zone, glare, spectrum, and controls, thus giving the designer increased flexibility to achieve their goals.
