Slips, trips, missteps, and falls are ubiquitous throughout the United States, resulting in almost 900,000 workplace incidents in 2019 and more than 8,000,000 annual emergency room visits. In addition, countless more incidents result in falls and injuries that are not serious enough to require professional medical attention. These incidents occur due to many factors, including distraction, misperceptions, illumination, improper designs and maintenance, and other dangerous conditions. Many believe that these incidents are entirely preventable. While there is rationale on both sides of that argument, steps should be taken to ensure that there is more than just adequate illumination but relatively safe environments. Lighting is a critical component of perception and conspicuity and is essential for pedestrian safety. These case studies will show how illumination combines with other factors to create dangerous conditions. Lighting designers, and standards, should more fully consider the related fields to ensure that lighting plans will maximize individual safety.
