While many of us pay lip service to the idea of collaboration, it is often another matter entirely when it comes to practice. This session will begin with an overview of compelling research findings on the importance of collaboration in rural settings, then shift from "why" to "how." From pitfalls to strategies, participants will learn how communities can be empowered through collaborative efforts to address emerging mental health challenges more efficiently and effectively. The presenter will provide sample templates and will share results and learnings from previous collaboration efforts. Session Objectives: Participants will be able to explain why collaboration is essential in rural mental health systems, drawing on research and real-world examples from cross-sector coalitions. Participants will be able to identify common barriers and pitfalls that undermine collaborative efforts, and apply practical strategies to navigate power dynamics, capacity limits, and misaligned goals. Participants will be able to use practical tools to design collaborative efforts that center community voice and shared ownership, informed by case examples from mental health and cross-sector partnerships.
