1A - The Science of Substance Addiction: Clinical Distinctions, Behavioral Indicators, and Intervention Strategies
CNE Credit available.
Substance addiction is often discussed in broad terms, yet meaningful prevention, treatment, and recovery support require a clear understanding of the science that drives addictive behavior. This session offers a practical, evidence-informed exploration of substance addiction through both a clinical and community practice lens.
Participants will examine how neurobiological processes, including motivational circuitry, tolerance, and dependence, interact with learned behaviors to reinforce patterns of use and increase risk over time. Building on this foundation, the session clarifies the distinctions between substance use, misuse, and substance use disorder, highlighting how an individual’s perception of their own use influences decision-making, risk behaviors, readiness for change, and engagement in services.
Through real-world examples, attendees will see how these distinctions shape assessment, communication, and intervention planning across professional settings.
The session concludes with a focus on application. Participants will be introduced to evidence-based strategies for identifying and interrupting the cycle of addiction, including behavioral interventions, motivational approaches, and recovery-supportive practices. Designed to provide both conceptual clarity and practical tools, this session equips professionals to respond more effectively to substance-related challenges in clinical, public health, and community contexts.
