Bethany PlantonStrengthening Nonprofits through Coaching and Staff Sustainability Slide Deck for Notes
In the 2023 Nonprofit Workforce Survey by the National Council of Nonprofits, almost three out of four respondents (72.2%) said salary competition affects their ability to recruit and retain employees, followed by budget constraints/insufficient funds (66.3%). Additional causes of nonprofit workforce shortages reported by nonprofits were stress and burnout (50.2%) and challenges related to government grants and contracts (20.6%). When nonprofits cannot retain or hire enough employees to provide vital services, the public suffers. Yet sustainability in the nonprofit sector is often reduced to "securing the next grant or major donor," but true organizational health encompasses a safe culture, efficient systems, and professional well-being. This session explores how specialized 1:1 coaching and intentional staff sustainability strategies can alleviate burnout and build a resilient workforce. Attendees will leave this session with: ● A Holistic Definition of Sustainability: Moving beyond funding to include mission clarity, responsible growth, and organizational culture. ● Burnout Mitigation Strategies: Insights from seminal research on burnout in the grants profession to help teams move past "doing more with less." ● Coaching Frameworks: How to use 1:1 coaching. ● Agile Integration: Implementing reflective practices and "retrospectives" to improve team communication and happiness.
