Like many environmental nonprofit organizations (ENGO), the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association (USRWA) has been pursuing efforts to diversify both its volunteer and member bases and its programs, events, and environmental education opportunities. So long as our focus remained on our programs, our efforts were unsuccessful. This led USRWA into the discussion of restructuring the organizational foundations around more inclusive language and sustainable long-term plans for change. During this roundtable conversation, participants will hear an overview of how the USRWA integrated concepts of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion into the structure of the organization. This roundtable conversation is intended for leaders and changemakers in ENGOs. Attendees should bring the top three challenges their organization faces when pursuing diversity, equity, and inclusion, the strategies already implemented at the organizational level, and an understanding of their organization’s written & unwritten values.
