Emma Hale Smith In the Eyes of Her LDS Descendants Many nineteenth century Latter-day Saints, including church leaders, decried Emma Hale Smith as a liar and apostate. The integral part she played in Mormonism’s past was downplayed and eventually forgotten. Yet, in the last quarter of the twentieth century, Emma began to be reclaimed as the “elect lady” she was during the lifetime of her husband, Joseph Smith Jr. In this presentation, Christopher James Blythe will discuss how an influential group of Emma and Joseph’s descendants—recent converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—came to spearhead this project.
