Breakout Session 4.4: Co-Designing a Culture of Respect and High Expectations within the School Community post-COVID?
The needs of students, ranging from behavioral health, academic, mental and social emotional supports, as well as the need to prioritize student connectedness and inclusion within the school community, all intensified through the pandemic.
This session will take you through Oberlin Magnet Middle School's journey, as they worked collaboratively to develop, build and maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment focused on high expectations of students and staff centered on respect. Learn how the initial, collaborative work of the administration, leadership team members and Student Support Services led to identifying the school's problem statement and defining the context of prevailing concerns of respect at the school. This session will then provide participants with the holistic approach led by the school's leadership in co-designing and co-creating a school culture of high academic and behavioral expectations for students, while ensuring students feel connected, included and valued.
Discover how a school (re)built a culture of respect and inclusion, as they navigated the impact COVID on the current educational landscape, and how collaborative efforts, building coherence and alignment, while being responsive to student data, input and feedback, have served as essential pillars of establishing high expectations for student learning, achievement and engagement.
