Emerging from the COVID-era service model our campus libraries had only a handful of returning library student workers compared to previous years. The Public Services Team used this opportunity of rehiring an almost entirely new workforce to reset and recenter the focus of their library student worker program model. Academic Library employment is an excellent opportunity to help undergraduate students gain work experience for post-graduation career success, regardless of the field. This presentation will share a model for student worker employment which maintains the dual focus of preparing students for post-graduation employment while meeting the operational needs of academic libraries. Topics will include emphasizing transferable skills, incorporating a mentorship approach to supervision, developing job-related learning outcomes and adapting to support the changing needs of college students. Attendees will be invited to share experiences with student employment from their campuses.
