Mid-Winter Conference 2020
Carlsbad, CA
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service was initiated in 2011, as an opportunity for participants to contribute to the community in which the Mid-Winter Conference is held each year. It is a time for us to step out of our roles as psychologists and academics and embody our identity as a civilian in service to others in need. In addition, it allows us to reflect on our own privilege and cultivate deeper self-awareness.
This year, we will be volunteering at Brother Benno’s in Oceanside, CA. This non-profit has been serving individuals and families in need since 1983. This agency provides hot meals, food, showers, and clothing to individuals and families in the North San Diego County area. In addition, there is a Thrift Shop to provide further financial support.
We will be engaging in service projects in the kitchen, food warehouse, and thrift store. The facilities are accessible and the projects do not require additional equipment or special clothing. The staff will provide us with a tour of the facilities throughout the morning. In addition, they will provide lunch (in the case of dietary restrictions, please bring your own lunch). We will engage in a short social privilege reflection and discussion on the bus in the morning and afternoon.
