In 2008, Schmeeckle Reserve shared a vision to restore a segment of Moses Creek with the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Department of Transportation helped the idea become reality with the design and construction of the Moses Creek Wetland Mitigation Site. Moses Creek, located within Stevens Point, was dredged and channelized in an attempt to drain wetlands for agriculture use in the 1930s. Like many urban streams, the waterway was no longer connected to its floodplain, eliminating important functional values. WisDOT’s plan included restoring/creating approximately 4,500’ of channel within a connected floodplain complex composed of shallow marsh, wet meadow, scrub-shrub and wooded swamp communities.
Now, nearly 17 acres of wetland have been restored or enhanced through invasive species control efforts. We will provide an overall history of the site and discuss development of the area into a WisDOT mitigation site. We’ll discuss monitoring results, how performance standards were met to achieve final approval from the regulatory agencies and a lessons learned component. We will also discuss site management, but from the perspective of the contractor conducting the hands-on work.
