The recent COVID-19 pandemic, appearance of avian flu in the U.S., as well as ongoing genetic evolution of well-known respiratory viruses make it important to have diagnostic tests that both mitigate the impact of genetic drift (avoid false negative test results) and that are broadly reactive to accurately detect not only the common, seasonal respiratory viruses, but new emerging strains as well.
