In this interactive workshop, school leaders will explore practical strategies for cultivating a thriving STEM culture in elementary schools from a STEM School of Distinction. Eastern Elementary School was awarded STEM School of Distinction in 2025. Increasing rigorous instruction through STEM in an elementary school means moving beyond “fun activities” into deeper learning that builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and application of knowledge. Students as young as Kindergarten learn about all aspects of the engineering design process, critical thinking, collaboration and real world problem solving. Participants will learn how to inspire and support teachers, foster innovation, and create a sustainable vision for STEM education. An interactive activity is planned where participants discuss various scenarios of leader behavior to determine which leadership styles create that spark for learning. In addition, participants will hear how Eastern’s STEM culture has had a positive effect on student achievement. From shaping professional learning to removing barriers and celebrating success, this session offers tools and leadership practices that spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence in educators—ultimately transforming classrooms into vibrant STEM learning environments.
