Breakout
"This session, hosted by the NC Principal of the Year Network, will equip principals with actionable strategies to cultivate authentic family and community engagement, specifically focusing on low-income, rural, and non-English speaking families. Drawing on extensive research, participants will learn to move beyond traditional, school-centric involvement models towards empowerment-focused partnerships that recognize and leverage the unique strengths and needs of diverse family populations. Principals will gain insight into how family engagement is perceived differently across cultures. The session will cover cultural barriers and differing views on education. Principals will also explore logistical obstacles like lack of time due to long working hours, childcare, transportation, and inflexible scheduling, and psychological barriers including past negative school experiences, low educational levels leading to intimidation, and fear related to immigration status. Participants will learn to create a warm, welcoming, and receptive school environment where all parents feel valued, along with key communication strategies, including personal contact through one-on-one conversations, phone calls, and home visits, which are especially effective and build relational trust. The session will emphasize two-way dialogue and feedback loops over one-way information dissemination, ensuring families’ voices are heard and valued as co-designers of student support. Principals will discover how to acknowledge and incorporate families' cultural values and home languages into school life and curriculum, viewing them as assets rather than barriers. This includes providing bilingual materials, hiring bilingual staff, offering interpreters, and providing language training for teachers and English classes for parents. They will learn how to build on community strengths, such as the support of extended family, and move beyond ""tourist curriculum"" to truly integrate diverse cultures. Principals will explore innovative ways to alleviate practical barriers, such as providing childcare for school events and offering transportation assistance. A significant focus will be on empowering families with skills and resources to support learning at home, through workshops and informal activities, which research shows can be highly impactful for student achievement and is an economical use of parents' time. By the end of this session, principals will have a comprehensive understanding of how to implement relationship-centric, culturally responsive strategies to effectively engage all families, transforming perceived barriers into opportunities for collaborative student success."
