Inspiring Purposeful Teaching
Advanced Placement courses are powerful opportunities for students to engage in rigorous learning and prepare for college success. However, the success of AP programs depends on more than student enrollment; it also relies on purposeful leadership that inspires and supports teachers. This session will highlight how administrators can motivate teachers to embrace AP-level practices, foster a culture of high expectations, and provide the necessary supports for all students to succeed. Using AP U.S. History as a model, presenters will demonstrate strategies such as document-based questioning and structured student discourse that increase engagement and achievement. Administrators will also see how these practices equip students with transferable skills, such as critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and academic resilience, that help them thrive not only in AP courses but also in college classrooms and future careers. Ultimately, this session will demonstrate how school leaders can move beyond simply expanding AP enrollment to ensuring meaningful AP experiences that foster successful students and elevate teaching and learning schoolwide!
