The purpose of this session is to share the success of using Professional Learning Cycles as an element of successful school instructional improvement initiatives. Using research from Nelson and Cudeiro, a targeted professional learning plan has the potential to move a school forward where adult learning is as common as student learning. At Chocowinity Primary, professional learning cycles set the standard for student growth and achievement, as well as establish a culture of professional learning. Repeated cycles of learning lasting six to eight weeks are embedded with supports such as opportunities for targeted professional learning, safe practice in the classroom, observation and coaching, professional readings, evaluating student work and data, and reflecting on learning goals. The intent of professional learning cycles is to build expertise of all staff within the building to in turn improve student results.
