The correlation between student achievement and family engagement has a major impact on student success, especially at the elementary level. The elementary school experience often sets the tone for how students and families personally feel about education. It is imperative that the elementary experience builds a strong foundation with families to support a long-lasting partnership throughout the child’s education. As part of their district strategic plan and in conjunction with the Silver Ink Framework, Mountain View Elementary (Jefferson, NC) is an exemplary school for family engagement. During the breakout session, hosted by Mountain View Elementary School’s Principal, David Blackburn and additional school instructional leaders, participants will be introduced to the successful elements of family engagement and provided with an opportunity to begin to construct their own engagement plan. This session will present an overview of important factors that create successful family engagement. Several successful family events will be discussed such as a Literacy Showcase and Kindergarten Orientation. Additionally, statistically proven high impact strategies for family communication will also be discussed along with other useful resources to support a successful engagement plan. By the end of the session, participants will be able to construct their own outline for increasing family engagement at their institution utilizing the strategies and examples from the session.
