This case study explores a mistake often made when law enforcement investigates people who download child pornography. The assumption that suspects will not have previously engaged in sexual contact with children encourages an approach to investigations which frequently leads to missed opportunities to rescue children. The presentation begins with the outline of a police investigation into 'a downloader' case which Detective Erin Schweitzer will detail and highlight the benefits of assuming that offenders of this nature are likely to have committed undetected contact sexual offenses with children. Using video extracts of a post sentence interview with the offender, Dr. Sullivan will provide an insight into how we can better assess the risks posed by these offenders. It explores the questions of whether possessing indecent images of children is an indicator of risk of contact offending, and if there are similarities between online and offline offending.
