In this presentation, we will discuss how Detectives can use pretext calls in sexual assault investigations. The presentation is aimed at new Detectives or those unfamiliar with pretext calls.
There can be variations, but in a typical pretext call, the victim calls the suspect. The call is recorded. The Detective is present and will listen in on the call.
The goal of a pretext call is to get the suspect to talk honestly about the incident under investigation, under conditions such that this conversation can easily be used as evidence in court.
We will discuss the costs and benefits of making pretext calls, how to prepare a victim to make a pretext call, how to assist during the call, and how to use any information gathered from the call.
