Even though the term ‘health literacy’ has expanded in recent years to include organizational health literacy, the focus is often still personal health literacy. While personal agency and advocacy is critical, it is also essential that systemic change continues to be addressed. In this session, we will reflect on real life scenarios of organizational health literacy challenges, identify potential solutions, and consider what practical strategies participants can apply to their own work, either on a macro or micro level. We will explore concepts such as plain language, the curse of knowledge, and patient experience mapping.
Objectives:
• Identify what plain language is - and isn’t - and reflect on how it can be further incorporated into your work
• Define the curse of knowledge and consider how it appears in their work
• Analyze a patient experience map and consider where there may be potential miscommunication in a system you are a part of
