Laboring with Hope is a short documentary about loss, grief, and the hope for change. The documentary is a catalyst to developing strategies for change and can be used in a variety of settings, academia, healthcare, community organizations, to promote dialogue that leads to action. Storytelling is a powerful tool that can support long term change and enhance health literacy. The session will examine the impact of using the art of storytelling as a strategy to address Black maternal health outcomes. The session will also provide strategies for utilizing health literacy as an advocacy strategy for improving maternal health outcomes. Objectives: • Generate and/or outline ideas for personal or professional storytelling. • Practice using storytelling as a tool for advocacy, using the example of the maternal mortality crisis among Black women in the U.S. • Discuss storytelling as an advocacy and health literacy tool in their respective practice(s). • Understand the critical need for innovative strategies to improve Black maternal health outcomes.
