We will review the most recent summary estimates, based on US data, describing contraceptive effectiveness across a range of methods, and will contextualize these estimates within a framework of person-centered contraceptive counseling. We will also discuss a number of caveats to interpretation of these estimates, and discuss how scientists, product developers, peer reviewers, journal editors, regulatory authorities, and clinicians can help improve information available to consumers about contraceptive effectiveness.
