Break-Out Session 1.2: The Science of Reading Shift: A look through the Pre-K lens
Presenter: Amy Geer
Hosted by: NC Department of Public Instruction
For decades, preschool teachers have been singing songs, reciting nursery rhymes, and teaching the ABCs. However, the results published in the 2008 Report of the National Early Literacy Panel indicate there is more early literacy work to do with our youngest learners in order to become successful readers. Not only do teachers need to learn how to teach new skills, many educators will also need support shifting their mindset in the type of instruction they deliver. Balancing explicit instruction in early literacy while also approaching learners in an age-appropriate manner will be difficult for some. This session will explore the shift to implementing science of reading instruction in early grades and provide tips for administrators overseeing this shift.
