Break-Out Session 5.5: Standards-Based Grading: Personalizing Learning for Every Student

Brunswick County School District leaders will share how the district’s multi-year journey to Standards-Based Grading to meet the objective of having 100% of BCS students, who complete high school, to be prepared for entry into college, the military or the workforce. In the school district’s 2019-2024 Here We Grow strategic plan, Brunswick County Schools is taking our school system to the next level by developing a collaborative culture of high expectations for all students and staff. The BCS leaders will share where they have been and where they are going to ensure a successful district-wide instructional improvement focused on personalizing learning for every student. The Executive Director of Professional Development and Elementary Education will share the district planning process and professional development plan designed to ensure and allow teachers to see evidence of their collective impact on student learning through mastery and standards based grading. A high school principal will share his school’s math departments’ previous experience with standards-based grading as well as how the district professional development modules prepare teachers by providing individualized professional learning opportunities and collaborative discussions with peers. An assistant principal, formally an instructional coach, will share how the BCS Instructional Coach team supports teachers by creating and providing curriculum resources for teachers and students. And, the 2020-2021 Brunswick County Schools Teacher of the Year and the 2021 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year will share her perspective of the BCS standards-based grading journey and next steps as a teacher leader.
