Break-Out Session 6.3: Equity, independence, and the power of effective systems: Designing effective scaffolding to grow students' independence
Presenters: Michael Williams, Rebecca Phillips, David Newman
District: Cabarrus County Schools
In this session, school leaders from Winkler Middle School will share their journey to design effective, equitable systems that empower students to be independently successful. Our school is ranked #3 among 2,550 schools in North Carolina for student academic growth (+14.22), and is one of 13 secondary schools with greater than 50% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch to exceed expected growth and score an "A" or "B" on the NC Report Card. Our session, which is led by the principal, assistant principal, school counselor, and lead teacher, will share our best practices in core instruction, community-building (rather than a discipline plan), intervention structures, problem solving, and social-emotional learning and support. Further, we will explore the role our systems play in creating both equitable experiences and outcomes and ensuring the longevity of our work.
