Loneliness and social isolation is an increasing public health concern in Australia and globally. Aim To deliver and evaluate a pilot program, “Connect Up 2617”, which provides the space, opportunity and support for people aged 18-30s to foster social connection and belonging and alleviate loneliness and social isolation. Method We used a participatory research approach and wide consultation and co-design to shape a program based on the premise that alleviating loneliness and social isolation is a community/societal issue, rather than an individual one. We recruited and trained local young Community Connectors who facilitate social connection across a range of regular activities in local venues and/or integrated into existing activities. They also provided peer-to-peer support for residents and volunteers who have initiated place-based and interest-led activities. Results From October 2024 to August 2025, nearly 400 individuals have attended at least one of 6-8 weekly activities, with over 180 returning multiple times and 8 active volunteers recruited to drive or lead activities. Initiatives include regular creative gatherings, recreational, social and place-based activities, as well as population-specific supports. The program partners with local venues and stakeholders to offer inclusive, mostly free of charge, low-barrier, and interest-based entry points, tailored in response to participant feedback and emerging needs. Early findings show increased social connection, belonging, and reduced loneliness among regular participants. Key strategies include maintaining low-resource, frequent and diverse activities, emotional intelligence in facilitation, and structures supporting volunteer-led practice communities. Discussion Lessons highlight crafting and shared co-creation as powerful tools, and the importance of local Connectors for peer-to-peer engagement. Sustainability planning is now supporting the transition of Connect Up 2617 to a local regional Community Service. Connect Up 2617 provides lessons for replicable, community-driven approaches for strengthening social connection and belonging in young adult populations.
