Introduction: Nature-based social prescribing (NBSP) practices combine the benefits of nature-based activity with the benefits of group activity for meaningful social connection. These practices are holistic, evidence-based, and cost effective, yet underutilized non-clinical treatments that directly improve mental health and wellbeing and can complement existing healthcare. In addition, NBSP also improves many aspects of physical health while also creating opportunities for Nature stewardship to enhance ecological health. The aim of my presentation is to discuss current trends in Nature prescribing as well as share my insights and demonstrate the value of integrating NBSP into my work as a community link facilitator within a community mental health service. Method: NBSP projects were developed as part of the Community Link program within a Mental Health & Wellbeing service. Participants experienced weekly engagement with NBSP, such as community gardening, walking groups, forest therapy, and Landcare as part of their mental health and wellbeing supports. Results: Program evaluation to be completed by November Discussion: Nature-based treatments remain largely unexplored and undervalued within the mental health sector. Yet, research findings on the restorative effects of nature connection are some of the most robust in the social and health sciences. According to studies the economic return on Nature-based social connection is more than 8:1 making it an excellent public health investment. Many governments are now starting to value public parks, reserves and waterways as a significant part of our ‘health care system’. Significance: Nature-based social prescribing supports individuals, strengthens communities and enhances planetary health and wellbeing. In a time of ecological crises and climate emergency we are in dire need of healthcare options that genuinely connect us to Nature, as well as each other, because our physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing depends on it. Recommendations: NBSP could be effectively integrated into many existing health and community settings
