Trek2Health is a Brisbane-based non-profit that provides nature-based physical activity programs for frontline workers, veterans, and first responders facing mental health challenges. Designed as a non-clinical alternative to traditional support pathways, Trek2Health functions as a practical and impactful model of social prescribing, offering a community-driven response to stress, trauma, and burnout. In this presentation, a mixed team of researchers, Trek2Health staff, and program participants with lived experience will explore how this program meets a growing need for preventive and non-stigmatising mental health interventions. We outline the referral pathways that enable Trek2Health to serve as a form of social prescription and present findings from a formal research partnership grounded in an ecological approach to health. This framework focuses on restoring participants’ ability to perceive and act upon meaningful opportunities for engagement, what ecological psychology refers to as affordances. Drawing on emerging data from our evaluation (including qualitative interviews, physiological assessment, and validated mental health scales), alongside powerful participant testimony, we highlight how Trek2Health fosters resilience not simply as a trait, but as an emergent capacity supported by nature, community, and purpose. We also reflect on barriers to participation, including stigma, referral inconsistencies, and the challenge of integrating nature-based models into existing health systems. By presenting a collaborative model for research, practice, and lived experience, this presentation invites new thinking about how social prescribing can be expanded through partnerships that value community, agency, and the human-environment relationship.
