The Australian Health Policy Collaboration (AHPC) at Victoria University was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care to undertake a national feasibility study of the potential for non-medical (social) prescribing as a preventive health program connecting primary health care to non-clinical, community-based supports to improve health and wellbeing.
Prof. Mark Morgan and Ms. Leanne Wells were expert advisers to the AHPC project team, led by Prof. Rosemary Calder with Stella McNamara and Prof. Maximilian de Courten.
The final report was provided to the Department in 2024 and is now being prepared for publication. This presentation will provide an overview of that publication and will discuss:
1. What success will look like in the medium-term future? This will outline implementation design principles and an optimal model for a nationally consistent approach to implementation of social prescribing as an adjunct to primary healthcare.
2. What work could be done to get there? This will discuss aspects of the report that suggest:
• What could be done now: by PHNs, primary care practices and community sector organisations, to implement and support social prescribing.
• What could be done collectively:
o development of a national implementation road map building on this report;
o development of a business case for a national centre for social prescribing to support implementation nationally and locally.
