QAGOMA’s Art and Dementia program is a gallery-based community wellbeing program designed for people living with dementia and their care partners. Over the past 7 years, nearly 5,000 participants have benefited from the program. This program is QAGOMA’s flagship wellbeing program, with 5 programs facilitated each month within the therapeutic setting of the Queensland Art Gallery. It is a self-referred and sometimes practitioner recommended program designed for people diagnosed with dementia-related neurodegenerative conditions. The program has 2 streams - for people living with younger onset dementia (diagnosed under the age of 65), and for people with late onset dementia (over the age of 65). Drawing from contemporary research in museum-based arts and health, as well as over a decade of program development and evolution, this session explores the evidence-based foundations and practical delivery of QAGOMA’s program. Join Debbie Brittain as she shares insights into facilitation strategies and creative methods that enhance psychosocial wellbeing by fostering connection, autonomy and meaningful engagement. The participatory nature of this session demonstrates how QAGOMA’s program supports participants to live well, while also examining key considerations of scalability, sustainability, and equitable access.
