Health equity is an aim of quality health care, but serious disparities exist and contribute to harm for vulnerable populations. Dr. Wyatt will recommend steps necessary to eliminate disparities and achieve health equity. Spotlight: Volunteers of America
Health equity is a key aim of quality health care, but serious disparities still exist. Health status and life expectancy among the poor and vulnerable populations across the U.S. show huge gaps.
It is critical that we begin to understand historical injustices that have contributed to health and healthcare disparities and how vulnerable populations have not been valued. This session focuses on the multiple determinants of health, the role of implicit bias, cultural humility and institutional racism, that result in inequitable care and disparate outcomes. Dr. Wyatt will make recommendations on steps necessary to eliminate disparity and achieve health equity.
Participants will:
1. Recognize how the multiple determinants of health contribute to inequities.
2. Gain an understanding how the harm by inequities are root causes of disparity in vulnerable populations and lead to community harm and mistrust.
3. Gain an appreciate for how historical injustice has led to devaluation of vulnerable populations
4. Discuss cultural humility and implicit bias, and build will for seeing how it manifests in your organization and how to address it.
5. Discuss and compare the experience of health care organizations in the USA other countries regarding institutional racism in health care.
