“If you see something, say something” is a common refrain within the food industry. This phrase sums up what many leaders hope their team will do when they witness an environmental, operational, or even a security risk. Developing this type of open dialogue is the foundation of a strong food safety culture.
Unfortunately, many employees (from the frontline to C-Suite) are reluctant to “say something” out of fear of potential negative repercussions. Thankfully, there is now a wide body of research from the fields of social and cognitive science that helps to explain the hesitancy to speak up, and more importantly, how to overcome this.
Drawing on this research, this session will provide deeper insight into the top three reasons why people do not speak up (even when they know they should) and the actions you can take immediately to foster a “Speak Up Culture”.
