As COVID-19 emerged throughout the world, interest in wastewater surveillance for this disease emerged first as a way to monitor its spread when testing was not available. When what was first hoped to be a containable pandemic has transformed into an endemic disease, wastewater surveillance has taken on a new more permanent role which is complicated by the way that sewer systems have been designed and constructed. The system in Buffalo, NY will serve as an example of the challenges that can be posed in developing a more long-term sampling plan and how these challenges can be overcome.
