Beyond Self-Care: Why Burnout Is a Workplace Problem (Not a You Problem)

Dr. JJ Ferguson is Assistant Program Director for Bethel University's hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in Arden Hills, MN. A sports residency-trained and fellowship-trained physical therapist, he holds dual board certifications in sports and orthopaedic physical therapy, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and earned his Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy (DScPT) through Bellin College where his doctoral research investigated burnout experiences among PTs.
Dr. Ferguson has published peer-reviewed research on burnout in both outpatient clinical and academic physical therapy settings, validating workplace mismatch theory within the PT profession. He has consulted with healthcare organizations and academic institutions to develop evidence-based workplace assessments using the Areas of Worklife framework, translating burnout research into actionable organizational tools. A sought-after speaker, he presents at conferences including APTA's Combined Sections Meeting and state APTA chapters.
He maintains active clinical practice in outpatient orthopaedics and resides in De Pere, Wisconsin with his wife and two children.
