Breakout Session 6: Oceti Wakan Prevention Curriculum
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM Wed
Oceti Wakan was created by 37th and 38th Lakota medicine men from Pine Ridge with the goal of helping to preserve the Lakota culture and language and the healing of the people. Cindy, who was married to Peter, one of the founders, worked alongside him to create educational resources. Their collaborative efforts resulted in the production of books and CDs focusing on Lakota culture and language. Additionally, they developed a comprehensive K-12 prevention curriculum. These materials serve multiple purposes: they provide Lakota children and youth with a strong foundation in their cultural heritage, introduce health and wellness practices to address historical trauma, and equip young people with the knowledge to make informed, healthy choices for themselves. Through these initiatives, Oceti Wakan aims to nurture a new generation of Lakota children and youth who are connected to their roots and prepared for the future.
