The Comedic Art of Japanese Kyogen

Gracie Shreve (she/her) is a dance anthropologist, choreographer, teaching artist, and freelance designer from Wooster, Ohio. She is a recent graduate of The College of Wooster with degrees in Music and Theatre & Dance. During her time at Wooster, she choreographed more than 15 original dance pieces for concerts, musicals, films, and other productions. Her research focused on the intersection of queer and disabled identities within dance anthropology, and she has presented on butoh breathwork with the Pan-American Vocology Association. Her designs have also been featured in Ohio Light Opera and Dobama Theater productions. She is currently a teaching artist with DANCECleveland and Beacon Hill Community School. This past summer, she served as a Global Mentor with HLAB Shinshu in Nagano, Japan where she taught dance history and theatrical techniques to Japanese high school students. Her experience with Japanese traditional arts comes from intensive study at Kyoto Art Center with Okura School Kyōgen actor Doji Shigeyama and Wakayagi-Ryu Nihon-buyō performer Yayoi Wakayagi. In the spring, she will return to Kyoto, Japan to study at Kyoshin Language Academy.
