Steven Winter, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, is Founder and Chairman of Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA). Mr. Winter has been at the forefront of the U.S. sustainable/green building movement since its inception. He has significantly contributed to its development as an industry, through the numerous leadership positions he has held.
Mr. Winter provides strategic planning for SWA research and consulting projects, in addition to overseeing the firm's operations. Under his guidance, the firm has continuously developed and cultivated a range of client services in energy, sustainability, accessibility, and other disciplines that have helped to improve the built environment since 1972. SWA has consulted on thousands of building and community-scale projects, including a handful of landmark projects across the nation. The firm has also evolved into a venerated and sought-after building science team, and has led numerous research and development projects for government agencies, utilities, nonprofits and the private sector.
As Chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council from 1999 to 2003, Mr. Winter led the organization as its membership and influence skyrocketed with the launch of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program and Greenbuild Conference. He has also served as a Co-Chairman of LEED’s residential initiative and then as Chairman of the LEED® for Homes™ Committee; he also participated as an active member of the LEED Steering Committee.
His personal expertise revolves around program management, green systems and products, energy-efficient housing, and the U.S. housing industry. His firm has acted as energy efficiency and sustainability consultants to residential, commercial and mixed-use developments nationwide, and as a LEED and NGBP certifying agent for multifamily housing throughout the Northeast. SWA’s staff of over 130 has completed energy audit, commissioning, and other building science services on more than a billion square feet of buildings in the past three years alone.
Mr. Winter’s commitment to sharing industry best practices and building science innovation is also exemplified in his teaching at Columbia University and the Pratt Institute and through his frequent contributions to industry publications and conferences. He earned the Evergreen Awards Perspective in 2009 and was named a “Hero of the Planet” by Builder Magazine in December 2002 for his contributions to sustainable building in the U.S.
