Satoshi Watanabe is a professor of economics in Hitotsubashi University, Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1980 and obtained his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1985. He joined the Ministry of Finance, Japan where he worked mainly on tax and international finance policy. He has also worked as an economist at the IMF and has served as the vice chair of Working Party 9, Committee on Fiscal Affairs, OECD.
He left the Ministry of Finance in 2002, and in 2005, joined the faculty of Hitotsubashi University, where he was the Dean of School of International and Public Policy from 2008 to 2010.
His research interest includes tax policy and tax laws, and he has written several books and many articles on taxation.
