Ivan J. Baiges-Valentin, Ph.D., P.E. is a Full Professor in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Materials at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UPR Mayagüez, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida. His teaching, research, and professional interests focus on sustainability and the transformation of engineering practice for the 21st century. His areas of expertise include life cycle assessment and carbon accounting of products and processes; plastic product design and manufacturing; the incorporation of recycled materials into new products; design for the environment; sustainable and regenerative design; and the intersection of sustainability, environmental decision-making, and public policy. Dr. Baiges-Valentin has served as a consultant to the medical device and electronics industries, particularly on the use and integration of recycled materials in new products. He is also the project lead for the development of the Solid Waste and Reclaimed Materials Management Program for Puerto Rico’s Climate Change Resiliency and Mitigation Plan. At UPR Mayagüez, Dr. Baiges-Valentin is leading the creation of a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability Engineering, an innovative program designed to prepare transdisciplinary engineers to help lead the transition toward a more sustainable and regenerative future. The program seeks to educate engineers capable of advancing human well-being while maintaining balance with the biosphere—an approach to engineering designed for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
