Madrid III - ¿Comprende? Overcoming Language Barriers for Safety
3:30 PM - 4:25 PM Wed
Oscar Melendez Jr. is the Health, Safety and Environmental Director for R&R Oilfield Services, operating mostly in the state of Oklahoma.
Oscar’s parents immigrated from Mexico in the late 1980’s. Oscar's father worked in farming, construction and Oil & Gas before becoming a full-time minister. His mother has worked in the restaurant industry for most of her time in the US, owning her own restaurant (where Oscar and his siblings have all worked) since 1997.
The majority of field workers and laborers in the downstream Oil & Gas service industry where Oscar works are Spanish-speaking-only employees.
Oscar has made it a personal goal to not only educate and empower his co-workers, but as many workers in the Oil & Gas industry as he can reach. His vision also extends to other industries with vulnerable employees.
Oscar has joined many networks and serves on several committees to address this issue, educate businesses and employers, and create real change across multiple industries.
His mission is also to educate young people, particularly those of immigrant descent, on the problems the previous generation faced; how we can learn and honor our past, and how we can avoid those problems or mitigate them to be an effective, safe and responsible generation.
