A quarter of surgical outcomes are the result of variability in the technical skills of surgeons rather than the surgery itself. Carla Pugh, the first U.S. surgeon to also obtain a PhD in education, is pioneering a new approach to medical and surgical training by using technology to enhance mastery and reduce errors. She envisions a future where surgical and clinical precision are transformed through real-time, point-of-care data sharing and performance feedback. New technologies that enable her breakthrough work include wearable motion-tracking devices and haptic sensors, to name but a few.
