James Ryan (JR) Caldwell is a theatre professor and practitioner living in Manhattan, originally from the Midwest. As an undergraduate James studied musical theatre (Millikin University, IL) and movement- based theatre including the Suzuki Method and Viewpoints (C.W. Post, Long Island University, NY). After graduation, James moved to New York and worked as an actor while training with the SITI Company (Anne Bogart, Ellen Lauren Artistic Directors). James performed in many Off-off and Off-Broadway theatres, including Playwrights Horizons, the Public Theatre, the Ohio Theatre, and the Culture Project. James then attended Columbia University, receiving an MFA in Playwriting. James’ plays have been seen in New York at Walkerspace NYC, La Mama (as part of the New York Fringe Festival), 3LD, and Dixon Place among others. Currently James serves as the Region 1 Chair of the National Playwriting Program for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. James continues to write and produce his original plays and screenplays, while teaching and directing at college.
