Visits to Children's Aid Community Schools
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM Wed
In 2005, I became the Community School Director at PS/IS 50, where I partner closely with the principal and school staff and coordinate a full range of programs and services, after school program, parent engagement, summer camp, and targeted outreach and support for students who are chronically absent (success mentoring & Resources for students and families in the community). The strong team at PS/MS 50 was recognized for excellence in 2007, when the school received the first America’s Promise Alma and Colin Powell Partnership Award. In June 2017 PS/IS 50 was closed. According to the Department of Education, despite services put in place for students the school was still under performing. Children’s Aid remained in the building providing services for the community ensuring a healthy and adequate transition for the students and their families who were placed at another District 4 school. At the same time, the team and I were in the process of transitioning to a new school and leadership starting in September 2017 in the same building. The school is Central Park East II. Central Park East II is a K3 through 8th grade school. Children’s Aid and Central Park East II have been working well in terms of partnership. The Principal, Naomi Smith understands our mission and purpose since she was part of the process of opening the first community school in Washington Heights (IS 218). We continue to grow and develop our partnership in order to continue to provide excellent services to our school community at large.
