Using a water footprint approach and the AquaCrop model, the paper compares the blue water footprint of five selected crops in 11 Nile Basin countries over the period 2011-2015. The blue water footprint is evaluated for two management scenarios: (a) current irrigation practices; and (b) deficit irrigation with organic mulching. Significant blue water footprint saving was found under the latter scenario showing its potential for application in the Nile Basin.:
The paper presents a new method for ecosystems services valuation that was developed by the authors. The method, known as the Intrinsic Ecological Value (IEV), estimates the economic value of core natural activities and links them with quantifiable economic processes and activities. The tool can be used to quantify the economic value of climate resilience functions performed by ecosystems.
