The paper presents an approach for determining the best satellite-based rainfall datasets that can support water resources assessment in data-scarce regions. Using the Blue Nile, Tezere and Atbara sub-basins, the method starts by testing the ability of different satellite-based rainfall datasets to drive hydrological models of the sub-basins. The simulated flows are then compared with field-based stream flow data to identify the data set that closely reproduces the measured record.:
This research which was conducted in the central clay plains of Sudan used a combination of remotely sensed images, climate data and biophysical modelling to estimate wheat water consumption and crop water productivity. These data were used as inputs in the evaluation of the performance of this agricultural production system.
