WQ2: Sustainable watershed management: best practices and case studies from the Nile Basin - ***ENDED
1:45 PM - 4:00 PM Thu
The paper discusses the challenges of misinformation and emotions that get in the way of reaching an agreement on the GERD:
The paper discusses the serious problem of widespread soil erosion in the highlands of the DR Congo and its socio-economic and environmental impacts on region and whole Nile system. The paper analyses the causes of the problem which it identifies as rapid population growth, expanding agriculture and increasing demand form food and agricultural products, low awareness and poor attitudes in the largely youthful population, and weak policies and regulations for control of erosion. It concludes by proposing collaboration between the DR Congo and downstream countries in watershed management measures to control soil erosion and sustain benefits of the Nile river system.
